AACE TS receives grant from the AT&T Foundation for SAT Test Prep Workshops
The AACE Educational Talent Search Program receives a $10,000 Grant from the AT&T Foundation
SAN FRANCISCO - The AT&T grant will fund an SAT Test Preparation Workshop for low-income, first-generation college bound high school students. In partnership with Kaplan’s K12 Learning Service Division, the AACE Educational Talent Search Program (AACE TS) will utilize the SAT Complete Taught Program to help high school students prepare and complete the SAT Reasoning Test, a standardized test required for college admissions, especially into all nine University of California undergraduate campuses.
Beginning the week of February 21, 2011, AACE TS will provide the SAT program for twenty-seven (27) 11th grade students at the Galileo Academy of Science & Technology High School in San Francisco, a high school served by the AACE TS program. Over 60% of Galileo’s students are from low-income families as demonstrated by the high number of students who participate in the school’s free and reduced lunch program (SF Unified School District Profile, 2009-10).
“We are grateful for the generous funding of the AT&T Foundation to provide financial support to the AACE TS program,” said Emalyn Lapus, AACE TS Program Director. “This grant will help the Galileo high school students to increase their academic potential for acceptance in programs of higher education.”
One of the core services of the AACE TS program is to prepare students for entering programs of postsecondary education. For example, the program assists high school students to complete their college and financial aid applications. Given the current competitive college admissions process, the AACE TS program wants to better prepare these students by providing a high quality, intensive college test preparation program. The Kaplan SAT Program will include instructors, pre- and post program assessments, and reports documenting student performance in the Kaplan classes. The goal for these students is to gain skills needed for test success and achieve high test scores after completing the SAT test in early May 2011.
About Philanthropy at AT&T: For 25 years, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have been committed to advancing education, strengthening communities and improving lives. Through its philanthropic initiatives and partnerships, AT&T supports projects that create learning opportunities; promote academic and economic achievement; and address community needs. As the AT&T Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2009, more than $160 million was contributed through corporate-, employee- and AT&T Foundation-giving programs in 2008 alone.
AACE Educational Services Talent Search (AACE TS) is a community-based educational/TRIO project funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and administered by the Japanese Community Youth Council. The mission of AACE TS is to assist low-income youth who have the potential to be the first generation of their family to graduate from high school and enroll in 2 or 4 year colleges. For 30 years, AACE TS has successfully assisted over 37,000 San Francisco high school students graduate from high school and enroll into programs of postsecondary education.
